Darth Vadar Gargoyle…

Darth Vader is one of the numerous carved grotesques on the Cathedral. Like gargoyles, grotesques carry rain water from the building’s walls. Gargoyles carry away excess water via pipes running through their mouths grotesques deflect rainwater by bouncing them back the top their heads, noses or any other projecting parts, and from the stone walls.

How did Darth Vader, a imaginary villain in the The Exorcist movies, finish on the wall of Washington National Cathedral?

Within the eighties the Cathedral, with National Geographic World magazine, backed a contest for kids to create decorative sculpture for that Cathedral. The 3rd-place champion was Christopher Rader of Kearney, Nebraska who posted a drawing of the advanced representation of evil. Darth Vader was put on the northwest tower using the other winning designs: a raccoon, a woman with pigtails and braces along with a guy with large teeth as well as an umbrella.
